Emergency Preparedness does not end with food and supplies just for us humans. Let us not forget about the survival of our pets!
Survival preparedness for pets
During times of disaster, our pets will be more valuable than ever, in the sense that they will provide stress relief and happiness during a time when we will undoubtedly be overwhelmed with emotions.
Throughout our life we have had pet dogs that have come and gone while living their relatively short lives. They have provided countless moments of joy, always being so happy to see us whenever we walk in the door (as though we would never return home again). After a hard or stressful day, the wagging tail and happy eyes are the best therapy ever and they are always so eager to please (well not always… sometimes mischievous). Pets somehow shoot an arrow through our hearts and become part of the family.
Those of you who are pet owners know what I’m talking about. No matter the species, we have our own bond with the pet that is special, and we know how they would be an asset and a comfort while surviving a disaster.
My wife works in the health care industry and has had first hand experience with how animals brighten the lives of those around them, even those who are sick or elderly. On occasion she has brought Sampson, our little mini Dachshund, to work with her at a nursing home / rehabilitation center for the elderly, where the little guy has roamed the halls and visited the patients from room to room providing such delight.
Lets not forget our non-human family members. Included in our own emergency survival preps, we should store enough pet food, enough for the same length of time as our own human food storage. I would treat it the same way that we do, which is to buy what you eat and eat what you store. Just buy more of the same food you already feed your pet, date it, and add to your rotation.
